1999 Lotus Esprit V8 three-quarter view.
№ 02 / 19 · 1999 MY

The Esprit V8 is the apex of Giorgetto Giugiaro's wedge silhouette — a shape penned in 1972 and stretched across an unbroken twenty-eight-year run, finally given the engine it had always deserved.

The Esprit's role in this collection is the chaos vector: temperamental, exotic, unrepeatable, and the spiritual opposite of every Japanese exotic in the garage.

Lotus installed its in-house Type 918 V8 in 1996: a flat-plane 3.5L twin-turbo making roughly 350 hp, derived from a stillborn IndyCar program. Hand-built in Hethel; weekly production was a dozen cars on a good week. Total V8 production was just under 1,500 units.

Risk note: Twin-turbo V8 is rare and expensive to service; verify chargecooler integrity and ECU mapping at PPI.
