/// Why this one
The R129 SL is the closing chapter of the engineer-led, cost-no-object era at Mercedes-Benz. Designed under Bruno Sacco, it launched in 1989 with a roll bar that deployed in 0.3 seconds, a hydraulic top mechanism with seventeen cylinders, and a cast-aluminum decklid that took ninety minutes per unit to produce.
Within this collection, the SL500 is the calmest car: a top-down GT that sits between the brawl of the exotics and a normal Saturday morning.
/// Provenance
The 1999 model retained the M119 5.0L V8 — a motor with timing chains intended to last the life of the car. 306 hp through a learning-ECU 5-speed automatic. Sport package adds AMG-style wheels and meaningful collector premium.
Risk note: Hydraulic top mechanism has seventeen cylinders that age unpredictably; inspect and budget for resealing.
